Here are 8 must do things for students planning to study in UK:
- Getting used to the British accent: It might be difficult for you to initially decipher the British accent depending on the region that you choose to live in. The northern British accent is really difficult to understand compared to the British accent in other parts of UK. Don’t panic. Give yourself time and you will soon realize that you are actually beginning to speak like a native.
- Understanding British jokes: The British have a weird sense of humor. Although initially you might feel offended by the jokes cracked by your British classmates, you will eventually get used to their jokes and might even laugh at them.
- Drink, but stay within limits: In the UK, individuals who are 18 and above are allowed to drink, unlike the USA where the legal age for drinking is 21. Furthermore, the British take great pride in the fact that they can easily drink large quantities of alcohol. Be sure to not get carried away by drinking contests. If you have never tasted the strong drinks in your life, it might be advisable to try mocktails or breezes instead.
- Incorporating the British style of dressing: Almost everyone in UK is fashion conscious and stays up-to-date with the latest trends. As a student, you will also get multiple opportunities to shop from the trendiest boutiques and branded showrooms in UK. You need not copy the styles of your British classmates but you could definitely experiment with your look if you wish. Furthermore, you could enroll yourself into one of the several societies in UK Universities and participate in the events and parties organized by these societies.
- Unpredictable weather conditions: Be sure to pack clothes for all seasons as the weather in UK is very unpredictable. Summers usually don’t go beyond 25 degrees but winters can get really bad and you might be surprised to be caught in the rains. Hence, pack enough warm clothes to avoid catching a cold.
- Have a ball at the fresher’s week: Fresher’s week is filled with fun, frolic, and madness. Hence, be sure to soak in every bit of this madness before you immerse yourself in books. Be prepared to attend several events and taste different types of drinks. It would be nice to pack some party clothes for the fresher’s week. You could also buy stuff at reasonable rates in the UK.
- Plan to stay in one of the university’s residence halls: The best way to interact with your classmates and get to know them better is by choosing to reside in one of the university’s residence halls. Although it is not practically possible to befriend each and every student in the residence hall, you will definitely meet like-minded individuals and even end up making friends for life. Moreover, you will have easy access to the University’s International Student Center and other student support services.
- Enroll yourself in one of the societies: UK Universities do not have sororities/fraternities like their US counterparts. However, you can join one of the several societies where you will meet like-minded individuals and even interact with your seniors who will be able to guide you on several matters like the best modules, good eateries, etc. In case, you think that these societies are only for the serious minded then you’re highly mistaken. Choose from a wide variety of amusing societies like the Quidditch and Harry Potter society.
