The QS World University Rankings 2015 releases ranks of universities every year. The criteria of their rankings broadly covers assessing of the following areas – academic peer review, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, employer reputation, international student ratio and international staff ratio. Of these maximum weight-age is given to academic peer review i.e. 40% of the rank of the university depends on the academic peer review. Faculty-student ratio and citations per faculty are 20% each. 10% of weight is given to employer reputation and international student and staff ratio carry 5% of weight each.

This year a total of 82 countries are represented in QS World University Rankings. The major share belongs to US with 154 universities, UK with 71 entries, Germany with 43 and France with 41. Others include – Japan with 38, Australia with 33, China 30, Canada and Italy 26 each, Brazil 22 and Russia 21 entries.

It seems as though MIT is very comfortable in the first position for it has not left it for the fourth consecutive year of QS’s annual rankings. Harvard has climbed two steps up, claiming the second rank. With the exception of MIT, the rest of the top ten have undergone quite some re-shuffling. Switzerland’s ETH Zurich enters the top 10 of QS World University Rankings for the first time. Significant improvement is also seen in Singapore’s two major stars – The National University of Singapore (NSU) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Both have climbed up the ladder by a big difference. The former has claimed the 12th rank, climbing up by 10 ranks from last year, and the latter has come up by 26 places from last years’ release and holds the rank 13.
