George Unthank, father of Becky and Rachel Unthank of the renowned traditional folk group The Unthanks, discusses his time on the BA Fine Art at Northumbria University. Both George and his daughters discuss their love of the region and how it influences them in their fields of creative practice.

George loved how he was able to discover for himself in a creative environment and be challenged during his time on the BA.

BA Fine Art
With the Times Higher Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts, and our successful partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, this course is well placed to develop your individual identity as an artist and launch your career into the art world.

This particular Fine Art degree gives students access to our on-campus workshops, media resources and exhibition spaces. You will find everything you need to develop your individual fine art practice. Specialist facilities provide you with the opportunity to explore a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, print-making, photography, moving image, performance and installation.
Regular group and individual tutorials with our research active lecturers will help you expand your theoretical abilities, while our professional practice modules will introduce you to strategies to launch your career. Leading national and international artists, curators and writers visit weekly and lecture to all our students as well as host one to- one or group sessions in the studios.

And it doesn’t stop there. Beyond the Fine Art course, successful students will have the opportunity to become graduate fellows or further develop their practice in Graduate Studios Northumbria with access to both resources and staff expertise.
